Thirty years ago, my husband, Mark, a sculptor, and I began searching for a weekend home outside New York City. His sculptures were growing larger, requiring space and heavy machinery, and I was balancing life as a TV producer and a new mom to our first child, Ray.

We had a tiny apartment in Manhattan and big dreams of country life—kids running through fields, planting pumpkins and flowers. With $20,000 and lots of hope, we finally bought a fixer-upper in Litchfield County, Connecticut, with enough land for Mark’s studio and our growing family.

At first, life here was very different. We missed the city’s energy, streetlights, and fast pace. But over time, the peace and beauty of this area became our new normal. The quiet roads, starry nights, and forest hikes slowly replaced our city nostalgia.

Life in Litchfield County is full of simple joys. Our garden blooms in June, local farms provide fresh produce, and small-town restaurants like G.W. Tavern and Materia Ristorante bring the community together. The area has always drawn artists, writers, and those seeking privacy—from Marilyn Monroe to Daniel Day-Lewis. But whether famous or not, everyone comes here for the same reason: the beauty and calm of the countryside.

We love showing visitors around: hiking at White Memorial Conservation Center, tasting wine at Spring Hill Vineyards, browsing local galleries, or enjoying fresh bread and meals at Community Table. Even with my New York roots, I’ve found a new life and career here as a writer.

Living here has taught me the meaning of home. On crisp autumn days, with the scent of apples and woodsmoke in the air, I often think, “I am so lucky to live here.”
