Autumn in Japan is like watching a painting slowly come to life. The season begins in Hokkaido in late September and moves south until December, when even Kyushu glows in red, orange, and yellow leaves. Compared to spring’s cherry blossoms, autumn is quieter but just as magical—cool air, fewer crowds, and golden landscapes everywhere.
This year, Japan’s weather agency shared the best dates for autumn colours. In Tokyo, yellow leaves peak around November 26 and bright reds by November 30. In Kyoto, golden leaves appear in late November, with deep reds in mid-December. Hokkaido, as always, leads the way, starting in early November.
