Breckenridge, a popular ski town in Colorado, is now the first mountain ski resort in the state to be dark sky certified. The certification from DarkSky International recognizes the town’s efforts to protect its beautiful night skies and natural environment.

To earn this title, Breckenridge adopted strict lighting rules, replaced old street lamps, and ensured new buildings follow dark sky standards. The town hopes this will preserve the night sky for residents and visitors for years to come.

Breckenridge sits at 9,600 feet and is home to Breckenridge Ski Resort, offering over 5,000 acres of open space and 65 miles of trails. Visitors enjoy skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, alpine slides, and now stargazing under pristine dark skies.

The mayor, Kelly Owens, said the certification highlights environmental care, education, and sustainable tourism, making Breckenridge a destination that shines both on the slopes and under the stars.

Breckenridge joins a global movement of communities protecting the night sky, following cities like Flagstaff, Arizona, the first dark sky city in 2001. The town was also recognized among the top 100 green stories worldwide last year.
