Remote work is becoming more popular than ever, and a new study shows that Taipei, Taiwan, is the top city for remote workers from the U.S.

The city stands out because of its fast and cheap internet, great healthcare, affordable rent, low transportation costs, and good work-life balance. Taiwan was also named the happiest country in East Asia this year, making it even more attractive.

For travelers, the U.S. State Department says Americans can visit Taiwan visa-free for up to 90 days. On top of that, Taiwan recently launched a six-month digital nomad visa, aiming to attract around 10,000 remote workers by 2028.

According to Holafly, the travel eSIM company that did the study, “Taipei has emerged as the most well-rounded city for remote workers, balancing productivity and lifestyle.”

Other cities that made the top list include:
Bangkok (2nd) – affordable living, rich culture, and lots of co-working spaces.
Prague (3rd) – fast internet and cheap costs.
Amsterdam and Dubai (4th & 5th) – great for lifestyle and connectivity.

Holafly’s research looked at things like visas, internet speed, cost of living, rent, healthcare, and more.

Remote work continues to grow fast — with over 40 million digital nomads worldwide in 2024 (18.1 million from the U.S.), which is a 147% increase since 2019. More countries like Spain, the Philippines, and New Zealand are also introducing special visas for digital nomads.
