The Big Island of Hawaii is full of amazing sights like black sand beaches, waterfalls, rainforests, and the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Over 1.4 million people visited the park in 2024!

One of the best ways to see the park is by driving the Chain of Craters Road. This road stretches 19 miles and takes you through stunning volcanic landscapes. Without stopping, the drive is about 30 minutes, but most people take longer to enjoy the viewpoints, hikes, and photo spots.

The road starts near Devastation Trail and drops 3,700 feet from the Kīlauea summit to the ocean. Along the way, you’ll see steam vents at Puhimau Crater, old lava flows at Mau Loa O Maunaulu, and Hawaii’s largest petroglyph field, with over 23,000 ancient carvings.

The drive ends at Hōlei Sea Arch, a breathtaking 90-foot lava rock arch by the ocean. Parts of the road have been covered by lava over the years, making it even more unique.
