When you’re planning a trip, you probably think about places to eat or sights to see. But one important thing many forget is—where to find a clean public bathroom.
A new study by Tena (a brand that makes adult incontinence products) shows that the U.S. has a public bathroom shortage. On average, there are only 8 public bathrooms for every 100,000 people. That’s not much—especially when you need one!
To help travelers, Tena made a list of the best and worst states for public bathrooms. They looked at things like cleanliness, wheelchair access, how many bathrooms there are, and how easy they are to find.
Top 5 States with Best Public Bathrooms:
-
Wyoming – Has many bathrooms that are easy to find and very clean. It’s also No. 1 for wheelchair-accessible restrooms.
-
Montana – Visit Montana even shares a full list of restrooms across the state, which makes them easy to locate.
-
Hawaii – Oahu has over 215 public bathrooms, but not all are on Google Maps, so local tips help.
-
Oregon
-
Idaho
When it comes to clean bathrooms, North Dakota is No. 1. About 94% of bathrooms in the state have 4-star or higher ratings. Alaska, Indiana, and New Mexico also have clean restrooms.
Worst states for public bathroom access include New Hampshire and Kentucky, which have very few options.
