For over 30 years, the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad has offered passengers a peaceful and beautiful journey through the hills of West Virginia. It’s not just a train ride—it’s a step back in time, letting you enjoy nature at a slower pace.

A Train Ride with Stunning Canyon Views

The train starts in the small town of Romney, West Virginia. From there, it goes into a remote and quiet area called “The Trough”—a river canyon with no roads, only nature. The best way to see it? From the train’s open-air car, where you can enjoy views of the Potomac River, old farms, and even spot bald eagles flying above.

Popular Trips

  • Trough Trip (3 hours): This is the most popular ride. It takes you through the canyon and back.

  • Sunset Trough Trip: Happening once a month (May–September), this version leaves at 5 p.m. so you can enjoy the sunset during the ride.

  • All Day Petersburg Trip (9 hours): This long ride runs from Romney to Petersburg and gives you time to explore the town before heading back. It’s only available the last Saturday of each month from May to October.

  • Green Spring Special (1.5 hours): A shorter ride north with views of farmland and rock cuts.
