The Lost Mine Trail in Big Bend National Park, Texas, has been named one of the top 25 trails to explore in 2025 by AllTrails. And it’s easy to see why.
This 4.8-mile round-trip hike offers stunning mountain views just one mile into the trail. From the saddle point, you can see the beautiful Chisos Mountains, including Casa Grande Peak and Juniper Canyon.
Why It’s Special
Unlike some hikes that make you climb a lot before you see anything, the Lost Mine Trail gives you gorgeous views early on. You’ll walk under the shade of juniper trees and piñon pines, all high above the Chihuahuan Desert.
Even though it can get hot in Texas, the higher elevation on this trail (around 1,100 feet) keeps it a little cooler. Just don’t forget water and sunscreen!
Hikers say the trail is peaceful and quiet, with views that leave a lasting impression.
Great for Stargazing Too
Lost Mine Trail is also in one of the best places in the world for stargazing. Big Bend is part of the Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve, the largest of its kind in the world with 9 million acres. The park has the least light pollution in the continental U.S.
One hiker said walking the trail during a full moon was magical, with the moon and stars lighting up the path.
