When people think of South Carolina beaches, Charleston and Myrtle Beach usually come to mind. But there’s a quiet and beautiful region between them called the Hammock Coast. It was given this name in 2010 to reflect its peaceful vibe and unique history—Pawleys Island, one of the towns here, is where the famous rope hammock was invented by boat captain Joshua John Ward.

What Makes the Hammock Coast Special?

The Hammock Coast includes six lovely towns: Pawleys Island, Murrells Inlet, Garden City, Litchfield, Georgetown, and Andrews. Each place has its own charm, but they all share beautiful water views. You’ll find beaches on one side and rivers on the other, with amazing nature all around.

Where to Stay

  • The Pelican Inn, Pawleys Island
A historic, peaceful inn open in summer, with views of both the beach and marsh. Guests enjoy homemade breakfast and lunch.

  • The George Hotel, Georgetown
A stylish new hotel with waterfront views, a great restaurant, and modern comforts like fancy bath products and cozy robes.

  • Sea View Inn, Pawleys Island
A classic beach inn where life is slow and simple—perfect for relaxing naps, beach walks, and family-style meals.

Towns to Visit

  • Garden City
This small beach town has vacation rentals, a full-service marina, and the famous Gulf Stream Cafe, known for fresh seafood.

  • Murrells Inlet
Called the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina,” this fishing town is full of charm and has some of the best oysters and views.

  • Litchfield Beach
A peaceful spot great for beach time, golf, biking, or visiting nearby Huntington Beach State Park.

  • Pawleys Island
Known for its relaxed vibe and “arrogantly shabby” charm, the island is quiet and mostly residential. Shops and restaurants are on the nearby mainland.

  • Georgetown
One of South Carolina’s oldest cities with beautiful waterfront areas, the Gullah Museum, and the popular Wooden Boat Show.

  • Andrews
Not on the beach, but perfect for those who enjoy kayaking or fishing on the Black River.
