Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city known for its scenic bridges and world-famous port wine, has introduced a new alcohol ban. From June 25, you can no longer buy alcohol from supermarkets, wine shops, or convenience stores between 9 PM and 8 AM in the main downtown area.

This rule applies only in Porto’s “Containment Zone”, which includes places popular for nightlife like Rua da Galeria de Paris. However, bars, cafes, restaurants, and nightclubs can still sell alcohol during these hours.

The reason? The city is trying to reduce noisy late-night street drinking, called bouillons, which have been causing problems for locals. The mayor said earlier fines didn’t work, so now shops that break the rule could be shut down temporarily.

Don’t worry though—Porto is still as beautiful and welcoming as ever! You can still enjoy wine tastings, historic landmarks, and the breathtaking views of the Douro River.
