You just can’t think of Amritsar without its most famous food — the Amritsari Kulcha. These crispy, buttery flatbreads are stuffed with spicy mashed potatoes, onions, and lots of ghee. Served hot with chole (chickpeas) and tamarind chutney, it’s a true comfort meal in Punjab’s food capital.
But with so many kulcha places in the city, where do locals go? We asked a few Amritsar food lovers to share their favorites — and here’s what they said:
Vernika Awal (Food Writer)
Vernika may not live in Amritsar, but she keeps coming back — especially for Monu Kulcha and Pehalwan Kulcha. She says these places serve honest and tasty kulchas without too much hype. She also enjoys aloo-poori at Kanhaiya Sweets, Satpura at Sharma’s, and the famous kulfa at A1.
Shorya Nayyar (Founder, The Bagh)
Shorya grew up in Amritsar and now lives in Dubai, but visits often. His favorite memory is eating kulchas with his dad after swimming. He recommends Pehalwan Kulcha, Ajay Darshan Kulcha (known for its croissant-like jalebi kulcha), and Harbans Kulche Wala in Tangra Colony. He even eats kulchas after a party, paired not with lassi—but with Thumbs Up!
Rameshinder Singh Sandhu (Travel & Food Writer)
Rameshinder says every area has a kulcha point and everyone has their go-to spot. His top picks: Ashok Kulche Wala in Ranjeet Avenue, Pehalwan Kulcha near Chatiwind Gate, and Ram Kulcha on Heritage Street. He loves that they serve kulchas on leaf plates, keeping things traditional. While some shops now offer pizza or patty kulchas, he believes the classic version is still the best — and says the secret is in Amritsar’s blessed water!
Rajan Sethi (Co-founder, Ikk Punjab)
Rajan’s favorite kulchas come from Ashok Matthi Kulcha (Lohgarh Chowk), Pehalwan Kulcha Shop (Ramgarhia Gate, running since 1953), and Monu Kulcha Hut (Loharka Road). He also recalls childhood visits to the Golden Temple, followed by a big meal at Bharawan Da Dhaba, where he loved the Dal Makhani and stuffed paratha thali, finished off with sweet, creamy lassi.
No matter where you go, one thing is clear — Amritsar’s love for kulchas is real. Whether you like it spicy, buttery, or with a twist, the golden city has it all.
