If you’re planning a trip to the Caribbean, especially Cuba, here’s something important to keep in mind. The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Cuba. This means travelers should be extra careful due to rising crime and frequent power cuts.

Why the Alert?

The advisory, released on May 7, warns that petty crime, violent crime, armed robbery, and even murder have gone up in Cuba. Travelers are told to stay alert and avoid showing off valuables like expensive jewelry or watches.

Another big issue is power outages. The alert says that since October 2024, there have been long and daily power cuts, sometimes lasting 12 hours or more, especially outside Havana.

Can You Travel to Cuba?

American citizens cannot travel to Cuba for regular tourism. But you can go if you have approval for reasons like:

  • Education

  • Religious trips

  • Sports competitions

  • Humanitarian work

Safety Tips for Travelers

  • Be aware of your surroundings

  • Don’t resist if someone tries to rob you

  • Don’t show signs of wealth

  • Keep food, water, flashlights, and batteries ready

  • Keep your phone and power bank charged
