Royal Caribbean has decided to cancel trips to Labadee, a private beach resort in Haiti. Labadee is about six hours away from Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
Labadee is known for its beautiful beaches, zip lining over the ocean, and fun activities like waterslides, a rollercoaster, and a water trampoline. It’s a favorite spot for families.
But now, because of the growing violence and unrest in Haiti, Royal Caribbean has stopped sending ships there. In a statement, the company said, “Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily paused our upcoming visits to Labadee.” They have already informed their guests.
This is not the first time Royal Caribbean paused trips to Labadee — they also did it last summer for the safety of guests and crew.
Right now, Haiti is under a Level 4 travel warning from the U.S. Department of State. That’s the highest warning, meaning Americans are advised not to travel there because of crime, kidnappings, unrest, and limited healthcare.
The U.S. government also said it has very limited ability to help travelers in Haiti if there is an emergency.
Recently, the U.S. Embassy in Haiti warned travelers about violent protests happening in Port-au-Prince.
It’s not clear when Royal Caribbean will allow trips to Labadee again.
