As an American living in Rome, I’ve explored Italy through its flavors, from snacking on cicchetti along a Venetian canal to indulging in a comforting bowl of tagliatelle al ragù in Bologna. I’ve enjoyed everything from Michelin-starred dining to hidden sandwich shops, each offering a unique taste of Italy’s rich food culture.

To dig even deeper into Italy’s best food cities, I turned to fellow Rome-based writer Maria Pasquale, author of Mangia: How to Eat Your Way Through Italy. Here’s our list of the top destinations for food lovers—along with what to eat in each one.

1️⃣ Rome – Try the four classic pastas (cacio e pepe, carbonara, amatriciana, gricia), pizza e mortazza, and supplì (fried rice balls).

2️⃣ Florence – Enjoy bistecca alla fiorentina (T-bone steak), truffle pasta, and lampredotto (tripe sandwich).

3️⃣ Bologna – Taste tortellini in brodo, tagliatelle al ragù, and lasagna.

4️⃣ Milan – Savor cotoletta alla milanese (fried cutlet), risotto alla milanese, and a Negroni sbagliato.

5️⃣ Modena – Try tortellini with Parmigiano Reggiano cream and balsamic vinegar tastings.

6️⃣ Turin – Indulge in gianduiotti chocolates, bicerin (coffee with hot chocolate), and truffle dishes.

7️⃣ Palermo – Explore street food like panino con panelle (chickpea fritters) and câ meusa (spleen sandwich).

8️⃣ Naples – Don’t miss margherita pizza, pizza fritta (fried pizza), and sfogliatella pastry.

9️⃣ Venice – Enjoy cicchetti (Venetian tapas), risotto di gò, and fried moeche (soft-shell crabs).

🔟 Lecce – Try fresh burrata, orecchiette con cime di rapa, and pasticciotto (custard pastry).
