The Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) are a stunning group of 40 coral islands south of the Bahamas and east of Cuba. With only eight inhabited islands and a small population, these islands have remained untouched and peaceful, making them a secret getaway for celebrities and travelers seeking quiet luxury.
Exploring Providenciales
Providenciales, or Provo, is the most developed island, home to 75% of the population. We arrived here to celebrate the New Year and spent time on the famous Grace Bay Beach, known for its glowing white sand. On Boxing Day, we joined the local Maskanoo Festival, where the lively beats of ‘Rake and Scrape’ music filled the streets. People danced, enjoyed conch fritters, and sipped piña coladas from coconut shells.
Thursday nights are all about fresh seafood, where locals and visitors gather to enjoy fried fish and conch. However, the Caribbean vibe fades amid luxury resorts and development.
Serene Beaches and Exclusive Resorts
A morning walk on Long Bay Beach was peaceful, with only a few sunbathers. The island’s coral reef protects the beaches, keeping the sand intact. My friends, who own a beach house here, showed me the South Bank development, a luxurious villa community with private boat docks. While the island grows, locals worry about losing its natural charm.
We stayed at Amanyara Resort, a secluded paradise on Provo’s northwest. Designed by architect Jean-Michel Gathy, its pavilions and pools blend perfectly with nature. Days were spent exploring caves, playing pickleball, and enjoying the stunning coastline. At night, the resort turned into a magical display of soft lights and reflections.
Unique Adventures
One unforgettable experience was riding horses along the beach and into the shallow water. The gentle waves made it even more thrilling. Another day, we snorkeled near Amanyara, surrounded by colorful coral and marine life.
Todlin, a local guide, took us through a nearby nature reserve, pointing out flamingos, starfish, and wild orchids. She spoke of the islanders’ efforts to protect their home, from limiting fishing seasons to properly managing waste. “If we ruin our reefs, our islands won’t be beautiful anymore,” she said. Despite having the option to move, she loves her peaceful island life.
Turks and Caicos truly live up to their motto: Beautiful by Nature.
