A record number of Americans are retiring in 2025, with about 11,400 people turning 65 every day. That means 4.18 million seniors will be making big decisions, including where to live for their golden years. If safety is a top priority, there’s one state that stands out.
Seniorly, a retirement resource center, ranked the safest states for retirees using data on scams, crime, public safety, falls, road safety, and healthcare access. After reviewing all the numbers, New Jersey was named the safest state for seniors.
The report highlighted New Jersey’s low crime rates, fewer fatal falls and car accidents, and strong police presence. It also has one of the lowest rates of property and violent crimes against seniors. Plus, Mays Landing was named the best place to retire in New Jersey.
Following New Jersey, New York ranked second, thanks to its low fatal car accident rate and excellent healthcare access. The top five safest states also included Mississippi, Louisiana, and Nebraska.
On the other hand, the least safe state for retirees is Colorado, due to high levels of elder fraud and property crime. Other states that ranked low for safety include Nevada, Washington, Oregon, and New Mexico, mainly because of high crime rates.
For seniors looking for a safe and comfortable retirement, New Jersey is a top choice!
