The weather is changing, and that means fall foliage season is here. According to AccuWeather’s annual forecast, travelers can expect a colorful autumn in many parts of the U.S., especially in New England and the West Coast.
Bright oranges and reds will light up New England thanks to good rain this year, while Colorado’s aspens will also shine in early fall. However, the Appalachian and Smoky Mountain regions may see duller colors because of flooding and heavy rain earlier this year.
Experts warn that the foliage season could be shorter than usual because of late summer heat, so travelers should not wait too long to enjoy the peak colors. AccuWeather estimates that 25 states will have vivid displays, while 23 states may see more muted tones—still better than last year when fewer states had bright colors.
Meteorologists explained that fall foliage depends on temperature, sunlight, and moisture. With climate change, these patterns are becoming less predictable, and extreme weather like hurricanes could impact trees for years.
For the best leaf-peeping trip, AccuWeather suggests looking for cool nights and sunny days, which create the perfect conditions for fall colors.
