In Florida, you don’t need a boat to hop between islands. Thanks to the Overseas Highway, you can drive across 44 islands (called keys) on a 113-mile long road. This highway is known as an engineering wonder because it stretches over the open ocean, connecting islands with long bridges made of steel and concrete.

Many people call it “the highway that goes to sea,” but recently, a travel platform named Hellotickets gave it a cooler nickname — “the road that floats.” The Overseas Highway made it to their list of the “Most Scenic Road Trips in the U.S.” alongside famous routes like the Pacific Coast Highway, Route 66, and Blue Ridge Parkway.

The Overseas Highway goes from Miami all the way to Key West, gliding over beautiful turquoise waters. One of its most famous parts is the Seven Mile Bridge, which is perfect for photos and is a must-see on Instagram. Watching the sunset at Mallory Square in Key West is the perfect way to finish this trip.

The Seven Mile Bridge, built between 1909 and 1912, was once one of the longest bridges in the world. Today, it’s still the longest bridge in Florida and one of the longest in the U.S. It connects Knight’s Key in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. There’s even a separate old bridge for people who want to walk or cycle while enjoying the views.

But the Seven Mile Bridge is just one of 42 bridges on the Overseas Highway.
