Finding vegan food while traveling used to mean eating cardboard-like burgers or plain salads. But thanks to the platform HappyCow, which started in 1999, plant-based eaters can now enjoy real food in cities around the world. HappyCow just released its list of the 25 most vegan-friendly cities, and there are some exciting surprises!
What Makes a City Vegan-Friendly?
The list isn’t just about restaurants. It also includes food trucks, cafes, bakeries, grocery stores, and vegan-friendly bed & breakfasts. The cities are ranked based on:
-
Number of vegan places
-
Vegan spots per person
-
Growth in vegan options since last year
-
How easy it is to eat vegan in the city
Who’s on Top?
London is still number 1, with 154 all-vegan restaurants and over 3,600 vegan-friendly places. Being vegan in London is easy — it’s just part of everyday life now!
Berlin and Los Angeles follow next, with Portland, Lisbon, and Barcelona keeping strong positions.
Mexico City and New York City made it into the top 10 for the first time this year.
The Big Surprise
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam entered the top 10 for the first time ever, thanks to a 33% jump in vegan restaurants and 41% growth in vegan businesses. It’s the fastest-growing vegan city right now and the only Asian city in the top 10.
