If you’re planning to travel in summer 2025, there’s one thing you didn’t expect — a rise in COVID-19 cases across Asia.

Countries like Singapore, Thailand, India, and Hong Kong are seeing more infections again. Singapore reported over 14,000 new cases in one week, while Hong Kong’s test positivity rate jumped from 1.7% in March to 11% in May. Thailand also saw large clusters of infections after the Songkran festival. In India, more than 1000 cases were reported recently.

What’s causing the spike?

Health officials say four new Omicron sub-variants — JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFG — are behind the new wave. These variants spread quickly, but most cases are still mild and don’t need hospital care.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has not called it a serious threat yet, and there are no travel bans or restrictions in place.

Can I still travel?

Yes.
All countries in Asia have open borders. Flights and public transport are running normally. Even in Indian states like Kerala, Delhi, and Maharashtra, where more cases are being reported, travel is not affected.

Should I cancel or postpone my trip?

That depends on your health.
If you’re elderly, have health issues like diabetes or lung disease, or are traveling with small children, it might be better to delay non-essential trips.
If you’re healthy, just be careful — no need to cancel plans yet.

What precautions should I take?

  • Wear a mask in busy places like airports, metros, and markets

  • Use hand sanitizer regularly

  • Avoid sick people

  • If you feel unwell, get checked

Also, check if you’re due for a booster dose — especially if you’re in a high-risk group. Singapore and Hong Kong recommend boosters for vulnerable people.

So, you can still enjoy your summer trip — just stay alert, stay safe, and stay informed.
