As the summer travel season begins, the U.S. government has issued a reminder for travelers heading to Italy: stay alert and be cautious. The U.S. Department of State has placed Italy under a Level 2 Travel Advisory, which means travelers should “exercise increased caution” due to possible terrorist threats.
Why the Advisory?
Although there have been no terrorist attacks in Italy recently, the advisory says there’s a chance of attacks with little or no warning. Common targets could include tourist spots, malls, restaurants, hotels, airports, schools, and public events.
What Should Travelers Do?
Travelers are not being told to cancel trips, but to stay aware of their surroundings. It’s also a good idea to keep up with local news and follow updates from the U.S. Embassy.
The Italian government is known to take strong steps to prevent terrorism, including investigations, deportations, and coordination between law enforcement and intelligence teams.
Other Countries With Similar Alerts
Italy is not alone. Other European countries like France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the UK also have Level 2 warnings for similar reasons.
To stay safe, travelers can also sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). It helps U.S. citizens abroad get important safety updates and messages from local embassies.
