Most of the time, Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre in South Australia looks like a white, flat salt pan. But once in a while, after big floods, it transforms into a beautiful lake full of water, birds, flowers, and life.

This rare event is happening right now in 2025. The lake started filling up in early May after record-breaking floods. It’s only the fourth time in 160 years that the lake has filled this much—and the most water it has seen in six years.

Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre is in Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park, the lowest point in Australia and its largest salt lake. When full, it becomes home to waterbirds, fish, and shrimp that can survive in salty waters. Even better, wildflowers bloom all around the lake.

The most magical moment happens when the water begins to dry up—the lake turns pink and orange, thanks to a special salt-loving algae.

How to Visit

To see it:

  • Fly from Adelaide (ADL) to Coober Pedy (CPD).

  • From there, drive (4WD needed) over 5 hours to reach the lake.

  • Best option: Join a guided tour or book a scenic flight to see the colors from above.

Best Time to Go

Visit between April and October (Australian winter) when the lake is more likely to have water and the weather is cooler.

Tip: Always check the current water level, road conditions, and park closures before your trip.
