Maine is known for its rocky coastlines, lighthouses, and fresh seafood. But if you head inland to the south-central part of the state, you’ll find something surprising—beautiful waterfalls hidden in the forest.
A team from Only In Maine created a peaceful 179-mile road trip that takes you to 8 amazing waterfalls. This loop starts and ends at Snow Falls Gorge near West Paris, Maine. The drive itself takes about 4 hours (not counting the time you spend at each waterfall).
Here’s the simple route:
1. Snow Falls Gorge – This is your starting point. It has four pretty waterfalls and is a great place to begin the trip.
2. Rumford Falls – Head north to Rumford to see multiple falls, with the upper falls being the highlight.
3. Smalls Falls – Just a short walk from the road (only half a mile round trip), this spot also has a natural swimming hole to cool off.
4. Angel Falls – A 90-foot waterfall hidden in the cliffs. It’s a one-mile hike to reach, but totally worth it.
5. Coos Canyon – You can see it from the road, but don’t miss the chance to swim in the green pool surrounded by smooth canyon walls.
6. The Cataracts – A narrow gorge with clear pools and small waterfalls. A peaceful and relaxing stop.
7. Dunn Falls – Popular and beautiful, with two main falls you can reach through a 2-mile hike. It also connects to the Appalachian Trail.
8. Screw Auger Falls – The final stop. These powerful falls drop up to 30 feet and are set in a gorgeous rocky area. It’s perfect for a summer visit.
This road trip is a perfect escape into nature and a hidden side of Maine many tourists miss.
